Documentary Release Set For September

In the months since our last newsletter One Production Place has been involved in several interesting projects. In November of 2008 we began work with International Justice Mission, a human rights organization based in Washington, DC, and together we brought an ambitious documentary project to the screen. IJM had original footage from around the world that focused on the horrible reality that is modern day slavery; indentured labor in the brick factories and rice fields of India, sex slaves in Cambodia and The Philippines, victims around the world that suffer dehumanizing treatment on a daily basis. IJM works with local law enforcement and within the legal systems of the countries where these crimes take place to help bring criminal charges, close down the operations and free the victims. IJM then works with the freed victims in aftercare support to help them get on their feet and back to their families.

I am very proud to have been able to make IJM’s documentary a reality. The thirty-minute film, At The End of Slavery was narrated by Danny Glover and has music from Moby, Trentemøller, Johnny Cash, Atlanta’s own Dave Watkins and Stan Satin, as well as an original score by Patrick Kirst (www.patrickkirst.com). IJM will hold a series of screenings in September in Washington, DC and around the country and will enter the film in several festivals. I have posted a brief clip from the documentary (click on the picture) and you can learn more about IJM here, www.ijm.org and about At The End of Slavery here (www.attheendofslavery.org).

With our continued focus on human rights and civil rights, At The End of Slavery was a rewarding project and we know it will be seen as a call to action for anyone who is concerned about helping those in need.

The Arts

One Production Place has just finished a short film on photographer Robert Weingarten and his current project, The Portrait Unbound, that will be at The High Museum in January 2010. Weingarten, a Malibu-based photographer has taken an original and daring approach to portraiture. How we perceive the portrait and what defines a portrait are challenged in the prints Weingarten creates. The film explores the creative process and intellectual analysis that took Weingarten on his journey into the translucent composite. I will post the piece as we get closer to the show opening.

Voices of Freedom Takes CINE Special Jury Prize

Voices of Freedom, the Civil Rights piece I produced for The High Museum in Atlanta was awarded the CINE Golden Eagle Award last fall and then went on to win the CINE Special Jury Prize (link to http://www.cine.org/special-jury-09-voices-of-freedom.php) for best in category (Arts and Exhibitions) this past spring. The piece was up against productions from The Newseum in Washington, DC and The International Center for Photography in New York as well as several other museums from around the country. Voices of Freedom is still being shown publicly as part of the photography exhibition Road To Freedom: Photographs From The Civil Rights Movement 1956-1968. It is currently in Chicago at The Field Museum (http://www.fieldmuseum.org/exhibits/freedom_tempexhib.htm) and will head to The Skirball Cultural Center (http://www.skirball.org/index.php?option=com_ccevents&scope=exbt&task=detail&oid=36) in Los Angeles in November and will finish its two year run at The Bronx Museum.

The exhibition has been a great success for The High Museum. Visitors to
the museum shop here in Atlanta can purchase a newly released DVD of the film that includes extra stories taken from interviews with the participants and an original poem written and recited by Civil Rights Activist Margaret Burke. The High also has more hard and soft cover catalogs of the photography exhibition. The book is sensational and will not last in the shop long so pick up a copy while you can.

Other Highlights:

  • One Production Place produced a 15 minute special presentation on former Chief Judge of The New York State Court of Appeals Judith Kaye. Chief Judge Kaye was the longest serving Chief Judge in New York State history, the first woman appointed to the Court of Appeals and the first woman Chief Judge of New York. Her historic tenure ended in December of 2008 (by statute) and we went to New York City, Albany and small towns in-between to gather footage to tell Judge Kaye’s story. Annie Liebovitz kindly donated her famous portrait of Judge Kaye as the closing image of the piece. The gala event was held at Gotham Hall in NYC in April.
  • Preliminary filming has begun on a soon-to-be-announced environmental piece. Watch this space…
  • One Production Place has gone HD and all production work is now being done in Sony’s XDCAM HD format. Drop me a line to learn more about it.

I send my best regards to all and hope that we can work together soon. Keep in touch and please feel free to pass along information about One Production Place to your friends and colleagues.

Cheers,
Neal Broffman
